Celabrating The Coming of 2009

Las Vegas is known for throwing amazing parties, some of the best in world. The city and county seem to just amp it up for new years. This year was no different!

There were many events around Las Vegas for all ages. Something was happening at most casinos, The Fremont Street Experience, fireworks, motorcycle jump of the Mirage's Volcano, motorcycle jump over the Arc de Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas casino, and the first back flip of an off-road truck at the Rio casino.

My personal celebration with Zac and Jenna was much more low key in nature. That said, we still had lots of fun.

Most celebrations have something to do with food, and ours was no different. We had seafood, which is special for people living in the middle of a dessert. Zac and Jenna had some breaded fish fillets. I treated myself to some peel and eat shrimp. We all had a few cups of creamy new england style clam chowder. We also had lots of chips and snacks on hand as well.

We watched CNN's new years show with Anderson Copper and Kathy Griffth from New York City's times square. it was cool seeing the celebrations from around the world, as we waited for the famous ball to drop. The children were very excited to the ball come down and for the new year to come to eastern time zone. For us here in Vegas, it still take 3 hours to come.

After watching the ball drop we call my parents and a few other family members, and wishing them a happy new year. Zac, Jenna, and I had a cherry 7up toast as well. Then it was off to bed for the little ones, or a least in theory.

I turned the TV to a local station to follow the local celebration here in Las Vegas. Channel 8 is the local CBS affiliate. They were broadcasting from multiple places on the strip, and also downtown at Fremont Street Experience.

At about 11:30pm, I woke up the children in preparation to watch the fireworks. At midnight, the show, and it looked amazing. Because of the Monte Carlo Casino fire earlier in the year, there was no rooftop launching of fireworks. This meant part of the show was blocked for people watching it live on the strip. This also lead to some complaints and disappointment. I think that the city and county need to come together for a better plain for the July 4th fireworks show. There has to be a way to keep the crowds, and property safe.

After putting the children back to bed, I had some champagne and lit some sparklers outside on my deck. I also said Happy New Year to the other people who were out and about in the condo complex.

I came back in and watched a replay of the local firework show. As I was getting ready to shut off the TV, and then some sad breaking news got my attention. Boulder Station Casino was being evacuated because of a bomb threat or scare. This was worrisome for me as that casino is closer to my condo complex then I would like.

I stayed up for about a half hour more, but no more news followed. I hope all was well. I was following the old saying that no news is good news. I said a quick prayer, and headed to bed.

New Year's Day will be a busy one for me, and my family.

Civilians Targeted in Israel - Palestine Conflict

This is such a hard topic to write about; there is much blame and high emotions on both sides of this conflict.

In the bigger picture of the United States lead war on terror, Zionist Terrorists, Hamas, and Hezbollah must all be dealt with for a lasting peace in the Middle East.

The purposeful targeting of civilians and other non -combatants is a war crime, under the United Nations (UN), and the Geneva Conventions.

Between suicide bombers, Mosad death squads, rockets, mortars, and a very heavy handed military; there is no innocence expect the civilians themselves.

Islamic nations have to come to recognize that Israel is sovern nation and has a right to exist. On the other hand, Israel has to recognize that a sovern, free, and democratic Palestinian state is needed.

In the current flare up of hostilties, Israel broke a 6 month truce and attacked Gaza. That lead to the leadership in Gaza to restart rocket and mortars attacks into Israel. Both have the clear right to defend themselves, so in this case, it just continues the cycle of violance.

98% or higher of the people killed or injured in this current conflict are classified as civilans or other non - comabatants. Many are also young children. The graphic pictures are all over the internet.

My country, The United States of America has been very quick to condem the people and leadership of Palestine, but at the same time offen turns a blind eye to the actions of Israel. I would call on President -elect Obama to condem the actions of both sides, and push the United Nations to help in brockering a lasting peace.

The world as a whole needs to do more to protect children and civilians

Patriots Win in Buffalo, But Fails to Make Playoffs

2008 has been a rough year for the much beloved New England Patriots of The National Football League (NFL).

It started in February, when after a perfect regular season and playoffs, they suffered a heartbreaking loss in Super Bowl XLII. A very rare mistake in clock management gave the other team enough time to score and win the championship.

The Patriots were the first and only to team to win 18 games in a single season. That is impressive in and of itself.

Much of the 2007 -08 season was caught up in a media driven witch hunt over violation of a little known league rule. They lead to other false charges of cheating, by people who were extremely jealous of the success of couching genius, Bill Belichick, and this storied and noble football team.

At the same time, the league had a new commissioner. He wanted to appear tough, not like the paper tiger he was known to be. The commissioner issued unfair and unwarranted fines against the Patriots and its couching staff. The only upside was that it put all the issues to rest. I can't help but think this was a major distraction for everyone; the players, staff, and the loyal fans of Patriot Nation.

Things didn't get much better in the 2008-09 season. During the first game, the Patriots lost the current league most valuable player (MVP), and quarterback, Tom Brady to injury. A few days later, after lots of tests, it was clear he would be out for the rest of the season.

As the season progress, the team was hit with more injuries to key players. No matter the lineup that was on the field, Belichick and his staff tried it hardest to continue to be competitive each week.

Patriots.com said, "In order to secure a spot in the playoffs, the Pats needed not only to win, but to have either or both the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens to lose their respective games, which kicked off at 4:15 Eastern Time."

The Patriots had to deal with high winds and other winter elements as they played in Buffalo, New York. In fact, the goal posts were swaying side to side for most of the game.

The team got the job done, and was in control quickly and throughout the game. The Patriots beat the Bills, 13-0. It was great showing and a shutout as well.

A chance to get into the playoffs slipped away as both the Dolphins and Ravens won their own games. This meant that for the New England Patriots the season was over.

According again to Patriots.com, ""Despite an 11-5 record, they’d be home for New Year’s and watching the playoffs.

The team talked of the sense of pride they felt despite missing the playoffs.

“In some ways, it's been a very rewarding year because of all the stuff we've had to fight through,” said defensive coordinator Dean Pees, alluding to the Pats’ astronomical number of injuries to key players like reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady.

“When you start the season off losing the MVP, and what our offense was able to accomplish this year, that's pretty remarkable,” Pees added.

“We had a hell of a season,” Wilfork observed.

“A lot of people doubted us. A lot of people counted us out. A lot of people thought we wouldn't finish the way we finished. A lot of people said our season was over after Tom went down. As a team, we rose to the challenge way back then. It just goes to show you what kind of team we have.”

For the Patriots and their legions of fans, this year has been one wild ride indeed!""

One of the great things about sports is no matter the outcome, there is always next year and season. If the New England Patriots can stay healthy, they are sure to bring home another NFL Super Bowl Championship.

Kwanzaa

Today is the first day of Kwanzaa, which is an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrated by millions throughout the world African community, Kwanzaa brings a cultural message which speaks to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense.

I want to wish all African Americans a Happy Kwanzaa.

I don't much about this holiday. I would love to learn more about it. I would also want to expose my children as well.

Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. Celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili, a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language.

The first-fruits celebrations are recorded in African history as far back as ancient Egypt and Nubia and appear in ancient and modern times in other classical African civilizations such as Ashantiland and Yorubaland. These celebrations are also found in ancient and modern times among societies as large as empires (the Zulu or kingdoms (Swaziland) or smaller societies and groups like the Matabele, Thonga and Lovedu, all of southeastern Africa. Kwanzaa builds on the five fundamental activities of Continental African "first fruit" celebrations: ingathering; reverence; commemoration; recommitment; and celebration. Kwanzaa, then, is:

• a time of ingathering of the people to reaffirm the bonds between them;
• a time of special reverence for the creator and creation in thanks and respect for the blessings, bountifulness and beauty of creation;
• a time for commemoration of the past in pursuit of its lessons and in honor of its models of human excellence, our ancestors;
• a time of recommitment to our highest cultural ideals in our ongoing effort to always bring forth the best of African cultural thought and practice; and
• a time for celebration of the Good, the good of life and of existence itself, the good of family, community and culture, the good of the awesome and the ordinary, in a word the good of the divine, natural and social.

A Very Merry Christmas

A Merry Christmas to all my Christian Family and Friends.

My day started even before my children got up. I guess you can grow up but there still something magical about Christmas, secular or religious.

I called my aunt Wendy. We have been talking more recently. There are things in my life that she can really relate to and help me move on from.

Zac and Jenna came running in to my room. I was on the phone with my parents. They were reading and moved by my Christmas Eve entry. I wanted it to be ahhh moment, and glad that it was. They saw it as my present to them.

After the call was over it was breakfast time. Jenna discovered she likes Maple & Brown Sugar instant oatmeal. Zac had his normal cold cereal.

Now it was time for the presents to be opened. The children were very excited to get down with it. it was a controlled as it could be, but have to say that were very good. I gave them both digital cameras. Many members of my family sent packages to the children. Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and even their mom sent something.

I got a New England Patriots mug filled with a garlic snack mix from my children. Aunt Wendy got me a can of Pistachios. Rozale, Arva, Steph, and James gave me a some stationary, two DVDs. and Dan Brown's Angels & Demons.

We all were thankful for our gifts.

We as a family made phone calls to family and friends. Talking to them or leaving messages on voicemail.

It was time to take a shower and get ready for dinner with Zac and Jenna's grandfather, Stephen. I try to get the children dressed up a bit.

We all headed to The Fresno Market Buffet within Arizona Charles'- Decatur Casino. I had some traditional holiday foods, as well as some southwest and American favorites. I also celebrated by getting some champagne.

It was sad the Boston Celtics end the record 19 game winning streak. I hurt more that it was the LA Lakers that beat us. You can't win them all, and we'll see the Lakers again in the NBA Championship Finals this summer.

With full bellies, we headed back home. It was a great family meal. Stephen is such a big blessing and help to my family. He is a special person who really cares for Zac and Jenna.

At home, we opened and put together some of the toys the children had got. After some playtime, it was time for bed.

What a wonderful Day!!

My Christmas Eve Growing Up

I'm a Pagan now, so this just another day for me now, but one full of memories. While growing up, it was very different. I was adopted by a Episcopal Minster, and a United Methodist Organist / Choir Director who went back to college and became a Deacon.

The picture has nothing to do with this post other then I really like it. The National Christmas Tree light up in front of the Capital Building. I see it as a nice holiday picture.

Christmas time was very busy in our family. My mom had a rehearsal and two services. My dad also had two services as well. I would sometimes go or as I got older stay at home.

My mom would make some clam chowder, and oyster stew a few days before. The chowder is a family recipe. I have seen the original recipe, and it starts off with have husband go claiming. Its a Rhode Island, clear broth style chowder. One of my mom's favorite things is oysters, so the stew was a treat for her.

Members of my mom's choir who live on the outskirts of town, or in a near by town would stop for some food in between services. They lived to far away from the church, or the weather was bad, or my parents were just social with them, so they came by in between services.

We all have some shrimp as well, or some special cheddar cheese from Harman's Cheese & Country Store. This store is near where my mom grew up in New Hampshire.

Many members of my parent's churches who drop off lots of food, and sweets. They were so good as well. I guess this is one of the up sides of being a child of two preachers.

Thinking about this now it is amazing to me that my parents could do there jobs and still pull off a near postcard perfect Christmas for me as well. It must be one of those Christmas miracles.

When my parents came home from midnight services, we would all open up one present together; then it was off to bed. My parents would sleep in, but my stocking was always waiting outside my door in the morning.

We have fresh buttery croissants and danishes for breakfast. On top of that, we have whatever was given to us as well.

The coffee would be flowing as we opened presents as a family. I would go under the tree and hand them out one by one.

My parents would then go off to a service if they had a Christmas Day service. I guess it just depended on the church they were serving at the time.

I hope that as a parent, I really hope that I can create memories like this for Zac and Jenna that they can remember all their life.

While writing this I'm really starting to have craving for my mom's homemade clam chowder. it was so very good!

My parents are so cool. I know it kind of lame to say at my age, but it true. The made have liked or agreed with everything I decided, but always gave the freedom to follow my own path. Sometimes I was wise, and other time I had just enough rope to almost hang myself.

As an example, my parents sent me some of Harman's Country Store's Cheddar Cheese for Yule. Yule is the winter festival for Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans. How great is that !!

Happy Hanukkah!!

First off, a Happy Hanukkah (Chanukiah in Hebrew) to all my Jewish friends. May you have a most wonderful festival of lights.

While growing up, I had a few Jewish teachers while in school. So I know a little bit, but I certainly could learn more.

I think everyone has the right to choose their own spiritual or religious paths. I think it is a plus to expose my children to all traditions. Even if you disagree, the knowledge gained is important to know and understand each other.

The Following is the story of Hunukkah:

About 2200 years ago, Greek kings, who reigned from Damascus, ruled over the land of Judea and the Jews living there.

One Greco-Syrian King, Antiochus Epiphanes, forbade the Jewish people from praying to their God, practicing their customs, and studying their Torah. Antiochus forced the Jews to worship the Greek gods. It is said that he placed an idol of the Greek God Zeus on the alter in the Holy Temple of Jerusalem.

In response to this persecution, Judah Maccabee and his four brothers organized a group of resistance fighters known as the Maccabees. They fought against paganism and oppression.

The tenacity of the rebels, which came from their steadfast faith in one God, is one reason this military victory has been so celebrated by Jews in future generations. In one battle near Beit Horon, Judah's small army is intimidated by the size of the enemy army and Judah tells them to have faith that God is on their side:

But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said unto Judah: 'What? shall we be able, being a small company, to fight against so great and strong a multitude? ...' And Judah said: 'It is an easy thing for many to be shut up in the hands of a few, and there is no difference in the sight of Heaven to save by many or by few; for victory in battle standeth not in the multitude of an host, but strength is from Heaven. They come unto us in fullness of insolence and lawlessness, to destroy us and our wives and our children, for to spoil us; but we fight for our lives and our laws. And He Himself will discomfort them before our face; but as for you, be yet not afraid of them." (The First Book of Maccabees)

Against great odds, after three years of fighting, the Maccabees succeeded to drive the Greco-Syrians out of Judea. Hanukkah proclaims the message of the prophet Zachariah: "Not by might, not by power, but by My spirit."

The Maccabees reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. They cleaned the Temple, removing the Greek symbols and statues. When Judah and his followers finished cleaning the temple, they rededicated it. On the 25th day of the month of Kislev in 164 BCE, the Temple was purified and rededicated.

According to tradition, when the Maccabees entered the Holy Temple, they discovered that the Greco-Syrians had defiled the oil which was used to Temple's menorah. Only one vat of purified oil remained - enough for only one day. It would take the Jews a week to process more purified oil. Then a miracle occurred. The Maccabees lit the menorah and it burned for not one, but eight days, by which time the new, purified oil was ready. This is why the Hanukkah Menorah has eight candles (not including the shamash candle used to light the others) and one reason why Jews celebrate Hanukkah for eight days.

Desert Draw at UNLV

This weekend, UNLV's Lady Rebels returned to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion. The Desert Draw at UNLV Women's Basketball Tournament was held on Friday and Saturday.

After a rough road trip where Coach Oliver's Rebels drop all 3 games. Oliver was hired to turn the program into a contender for Mountain West and National Championships.

To play on that level you need to win no matter were you are playing. Most final four teams are perfect, have one loss, and a rare few have a second loss.

In the second game of the tournament, The Lady Rebels beat Cal State Northridge 88-69.

Shamela Hampton and Jamie Smith (picture above left) both posted double-doubles, and Brittany Halberg scored 12 points.

The win means that UNLV will face #22 Oklahoma State in Saturday's Championship game.

The Lady Rebels were looking for an upset, but feel short. That said, they played a tough and honorable game. They lost 88-73.

During the first half the Lady Rebels had as much as a 10 point lead. But they let the Cowgirls get a 12-0 run in second half that was just to much for them to over come.

Smith scored a career-high 27 points and earned her second-straight double-double. India Chaney scored 14 points, and Brittany Halberg had 10 points.

Having My Tattoo Redone at Lucky - Cat Tattoo Studio

After Yule, I was going to meet up with some friends, and do the normal Saturday night thing of hanging out, movies, drinking, food, crafts, magickal home, ect. On Saturday's, Grandpa Johnson come over and watches the children to give some time to myself, a date, or hang with friends.

At the Agrave Spirit Grove ritual, some of the members wanted to see my tattoo. I show them, and the feedback was mostly positive.

I was happy with how my tattoo originally came out for the most part. The design was mine, to express my faith and spirituality. It was my first tattoo, so I did really know what to expect.

Somethings I didn't like, was the paws of the wolf just stop, and when it was colored, the brightness just never lived up to the claim. I just didn't have that pop, I was looking for.

I heard about and got the number of the artist from another member of the Pagan and Witches Community Circle. he lived in one of the rougher sections of town and tattooed on his kitchen table. I didn't know it at the time, but now I do that he also was pressing very hard. This increased the pain level.

With the replaying of Yule, and thoughts about my tattoo in my head. I came upon the Lucky - Cat Tattoo Studio.

Owner and artist, Jerry Thomas and I talked; I wanted to have my tattoo re - colored, and add another crescent moon to create the God Symbol on top of the Triple Goddess Symbol that was already apart of the piece. He quoted a really great price. Jerry had just finished doing some work on a woman, and had one appointment to go. If I would come back at 12:30am, he would do the work.

After visiting Walmart and Sonic, I headed back to the studio. We talked for a few minutes while Jerry set up. We got started around 1am.

The colors were so bright from the start, just as I have imagine. There is always a certain amount of discomfort involved, but throughout the whole time there was not real pain. In fact, when laying on my stomach , the hum of the tattoo machine almost put me to sleep.

Jerry take great pride in his work, and wants the give his clients the best every time. His studio is amazing. It makes you comfortable right away. Because of this he started almost immediately to fix thing that bothered him as well. Things like fixing the outline, making the nose & ears look more wolf like, and adding new color combinations & textures as well. He went far beyond what would be expected.

I feel like I have a brand new tattoo; one that is closer to my original vision. We finished around 3:30am in the morning. I was thankful he was will to do the work at a time when I have someone to watch my children.

Is my tattoo done? For the next 3 weeks adleast it is, while it heals. Jerry and I have already started talking about some ideas for a background, and how to complete the paws on the wolf.

Tattooing can become very addictive. I have a few ideas for other projects in the future. Jerry is going to draw them up for me. Time and money will dictate allot as well. My family's well being come before a tattoo.

I do look forward to working with Jerry again. I will also tell my friends about how happy I am, and that they should stop by for their body art needs.

Tattoo After Care:

• Leave plastic wrap on for 1 or 1 1/2 hours.
• After you remove the wrap, wash gently with anti -bactrial soap and water. pat dry. Do not rub!
• You will apply a thin layer of either A&D Ointment or Lubridem Lotion on the area for 2 weeks or until healed.
• Don not submerge /soak your tattoo in water until completely healed.
• Keep your tattoo out of direct contact with the sun until healed (Even after tattoo heals, sun exposure without sunscreen can cause the tattoo to fade.)
• If these instructions are not followed, it can result in poor healing and /or loss of color.

Yule With Agrave Spirit Grove

First, a most Blessed Yule to my friends of all Pagan paths

For ritual tonight, I attended one held by Agrave Spirit Grove. They are a group of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans serving Las Vegas and all of Southern Nevada.

Before ritual we had a potluck dinner, I had gotten some rotisserie chickens and some fried chicken wings to share with the group. had some time to talk and meet other members, including the president, and some board members.

I really liked as part of the casting the circle; a poem by Susan Morris was read," We are in a palce that is not a place. We are in a space that is not a space. We are in a time that is not a time. We 0pen up our minds, so that we are free. Open the third eye, so that we can see. Open up and be free in our rites. Open up and be ready to receive. The circle has been cast, we are between the worlds."

The other part that sticks out in my mind was this," May the spirit of Yule remain with us all. For the entire turning of the wheel. May our obstacles and snares vanish. May our seeds take root and flourish. May we each be blessed by the Spirit."

I really enjoyed myself. great energy and people with such sweet spirits. You just can't beat a circle that has padded seats.

I am and will always be loyal to The Pagan and Witches Community Circle, and its High Priestess, Lily. Agrave Spirit Grove is a group I want to spend some time with as well. I like them both.

California's Attorney General To Fight For Equal Human and Civil Rights For Everyone

Today, Jerry Brown (pictured on the right), California's Attorney General asked the Supreme Court of California to repeal the highly unconstitutional, Mormon and Fundamentalist Christian lead proposition 8.

The misleading and hateful proposition 8 passed on election day, by playing on peoples' fear, cultural & religious differences, and extradited stereo types.

""The amendment-initiative process does not encompass a power to abrogate fundamental constitutional rights without a compelling justification," he wrote. "Proposition 8 lacks such a justification."

Brown, who served as governor from 1975 to 1983, is considering seeking the office again in 2010. After California voters passed Proposition 8 on Nov. 4, Brown said he personally voted against it.

He submitted his brief in one of the three legal challenges to Proposition 8 brought by same-sex marriage supporters. The measure, a constitutional amendment that passed with 52 percent of the vote, overruled the Supreme Court decision last spring that briefly legalized gay marriage in the nation's most populous state."", according to a Fox News Channel report.

We have the separation of church and state in America. This was the founding fathers reaction to the King of England being both head of the church, and government. They did not want these zealots and snake oils salesmen to have undo control over the government. Many of the founding fathers went out of their way to make the point that the United States of America was not founded as a Christian nation, no matter what personal believes they held.

The Mormon church is in some trouble with IRS for possibly funneling millions of dollars of it money to the YES on 8 campaign. If this found to be true, it would violate the law, and the Church's' tax -free status. The IRS is investigating to see if a hearing is needed.

Mormon temples have been targets of massive protests by Human and Civil Rights Activists. Also indoctrination numbers by the church's missionaries has dropped since the church's involvement in this was made public.

It is extremely sad that some hide behind religion or religions to cover their own perverted message. Jesus would be ashamed at this. He preached a message of love and acceptance of all people. Were the backers of proposition 8 preach hate, bigotry, fear, and deception in order to get more power, control and money.

In a BBC News report, "The Supreme Court has said it will hear the challenges to Proposition 8, but that pending its ruling, the ban on gay marriage remains in effect.

The court has said a hearing on the challenges could be held by next March.

Connecticut and Massachusetts are the only states to allow gay marriage. Several other states allow civil unions. "

I was born just out side of Boston, Massachusetts, and spent my teens, and part of my 20's in Connecticut before moving west to Las Vegas, Nevada.

I support equal Human and Civil Rights for all people, this includes GLBT Rights. This is an major area were I use my political training and skills.

We can't let the forces of hate, and intolerance win!

A Yule / Winter Solstice Ritual

This Saturday, the night of the 2oth of December will be Yule or the Winter Solstice. This another turn on the Wheel of the Year. Its a time that Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans gather to have a ritual and celabration.

Here is what my High Priestess, Lily, has written about this hoilday," Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year. It is from this point that the days begin slowly to become longer and longer. The sun is at its most southeastern point over the Tropic of Capricorn in the northern hemisphere and has no apparent northward or southward motion. In the time of the ancient tribes this was a time of celebration, for it meant the turning point of winter and the eventual return of spring. Yule is the time when we honor the Goddess for giving birth to the sun once more. It is the time when the Oak King is victorious over the Holly King. The Holly King represents death and darkness that has ruled since Samhain, and the Oak King represents rebirth and life. The waning (diminishing) sun is overtaken by the waxing (increasing) sun, thus the days become longer after the victory of the Oak King."

Yule / Winter Solstice Ritual Guide

Needed:

Holly sprig

Mistletoe sprig

Black votive candle

Green candle

White candle

Gold candle

Cauldron

Place the gold God candle at right top of altar, and the white Goddess candle at the top left. Place your Cauldron to the right of the altar, with the black votive candle, Holly sprig around it, inside. Cover cauldron with lid or cover plate. Place the green candle and mistletoe where they will be behind you at the beginning of the ritual. Cast the circle.

"From the darkness is born the light,From void, fulfillment emerges.The darkest night of the year is at the threshold,Open now the door, and honor the darkness."

Take the lid/plate off the cauldron and light the black votive candle inside. Give silent honor to the Holly King, the ruler of the dark half of the year. Meditate on the seasons of the past year, and how their lessons have brought you to where you are today. When ready, begin again:

"Dark my surroundings, and cold be this night But Your labor, Blessed Mother, has reborn the sacred Light.The child divine, the most honored SunShall return with the sunrise again; Two will be One."

Remove the holly from around the black votive candle. With your projective hand (right if you're right-handed, left if you're left-handed), present the holly to the four elements. Then place it behind you, to signify the death of the Holly King. Turn back to the altar. With your receptive hand, reach behind you, and bring forward the mistletoe and the green candle. Present them to the elements, slide the mistletoe over the green candle and place the candle in the cauldron.

Light the green candle with the black votive candle and say:

"Behold the rebirth of the King of the Woodlands!Behold the Oak King, strong and vital he rises!"

Snuff the black votive candle and with your projective hand, place it behind you. Turn back to the cauldron, close your eyes, and silently honor the Oak King. Begin again:

"Awake now Your Mother, Your Lover, Your Lady Awake now the Goddess of Life, Death, Rebirth."

Take the green candle out of the cauldron and light the white Goddess candle on the altar. Put the green candle back into the cauldron. Take the white Goddess candle with both hands and hold out at arm's length over the cauldron:

"Awaken, my Lady, look upon Your divine child,His rebirth while You slumbered was subtle and silent.The Stag King, the Green Man, Lord of Fertility,He awaits Your wakening, gentle and benevolent."

Place the white Goddess candle back in its holder. Assume the Goddess position. Say:

"All hail the Oak King; His rebirth, a promise.All hail the divine child, Giver of Life.All hail the blessed Sun, reborn to the Mother For He retakes His throne at the end of Solstice Night!"

Meditation. Cakes and Ale.

Face the cauldron and the green candle still burning bright.

"Before my circle tonight, I close with blessings I ask for this house and my kin.Tomorrow at daybreak, when I arise A special flame I will carry within.And a gold candle upon my altar I'll light Adding my will to the Sun King's intent To climb aloft in the vaulted skies.And for strength back to me; the strength I've sent."

Snuff the green candle. Place the mistletoe on the pentacle. Close the circle.

Leave the gold God candle on your altar to light upon rising in the morning.

Snow In Sin City!

Hell has frozen over, or for the next few hours adleast. It is funny to joke about it, but it really has snowed in sin city itself, Las Vegas, Nevada.

If you were a betting man or woman, today would be your lucky day. At the Las Vegas Hilton sports book the odds of snow on the strip were 1,000 to 1 and the odds you could build a snowman on the strip were 50,000 to 1. With the standard minimum of a 5 dollar bet, the winnings would be life changing.

Speaking of snowman, the picture on the above right is one my son, Zac, and Daughter, Jenna built on a section of grass in our condo complex.

A few times a winter a few parts of the valley get a dusting of snow, but nothing like this. There is 4 to 6 inches here, and up to 10 inches in other section of the city.

For Zac and Jenna this was there first real snow storm of their lives, and they are 7 and 5 year old. For me this was first snow since I was a newly wed with no children living with my parents in Connecticut the winter of 2000/01.

The children were very excited to see the snow develop, and then go play in it. Because we live in a desert, no gloves or hat to be found. So a pair of my socks made for quick mittens.They had a blast for a good hour or so. After the it was time to come in for some nice hot chocolate.

Zac was very lucky his track was having parent -teacher conferences, so he was not in school during the start of the storm. He will also get a snow day tomorrow. Its on the news that the Clark County School District has closed all schools.

The city is kind of shut down at the moment. McCarran Airport is closed no plows to clear runways, and no equipment for de-icing the planes. Amtrak and Greyhound are not running. The highways are closed block by law enforcement, long before you come to areas affected by the storm.

The national weather service has said this storm is the eight largest snowstorm to hit Las Vegas since they started keeping records. It was also the most snow the valley has since in about 30 years, so it a historical event as well. McCarran set a record for the amount of snow.

Most of all above everything is that this rare event, a snowstorm in the desert gave us some good family fun.

McCain to Palin: Ehhh ...

Sunday School - Element of Fire

Tonight, was the second in a series of classes on Paganism, Wicca, and Witchcraft. The Topic was the element of fire. The meeting was full of heat.

Before I get into this all, The picture to the left is my personal alter. For the moment it the top of a burrow in my bedroom, but I hope in future to make or buy a table to have it on permanently.

I gave Ragen a ride to class, because she lives close to me, and it is silly to have her take a two or more hours of bus rides for a 15/20 minute trip. It was great to see Fannessa as well. These women along with my High Priestess, Lily, are very special to me. We talk offen, and they are guides in my life. I thank the Goddess, that they are in my life.

Here is what was written about the class,"Join us for our second class in a series of many! The topic for the evening will be FIRE. We will cover the following:

Herbs related to Fire
Making a wand (most supplies will be provided)
Circle Casting
and history/info on Yule/Winter Solstice.......

I would ask that between now and then you find a suitable piece of wood for your wand. A branch from a tree is the best, cut early so that it has time to dry out. Your wand should be about 16 inches long, and no wider than an inch in diameter. Don't go to skinny though or your wand will be flimsy. Do the best that you can with removing extra branches. If you are coming to the Sunday Service on the 30th, you are free to arrive an hour early and use my hack saw. For those that aren't able to find a suitable branch, or simply forget, I will have some extras available at the class. I will provide the remainder of the supplies for finishing the wands."

Making a wand was the activity of the night. I, being crafty challenged need lot of help on projects like this. At service last month, I was able to get a branch from Lily. My condo complex doesn't like or allow us to cut the trees, and they are all evergreens and palm tress. so before the class I got some help sanding it, and attaching a stone tip.

At class, I was able to see a design form. I again need help. I had 2 pentacles burned into the wood. some plastic jewels glued on. The stone at to is help on my glue, but covered by silver and blue wire. I also had some silver ribbon that match the smugger that got made last class. To finish it off, I added 3 blue heart beads to the each end of the ribbon. I'm really like the wand, and will treasure it. I'm so thankful for all who helped me, and it be a remembrance of them as well.

The class was itself was amazing. Lily taught wonderfully as usually, and I really enjoy the add comments for another member of the group, Micheal.

I learned that my favorite animal, a wolf, and my Chinese Zodiac sign, the dragon are both under the element of fire. Its very interesting to me that a water sign, pieces, would also have much fire around me.

I also learn about many of the herbs, plants, and trees that are connected with the fire element.

We also had a chance to celebrate a birthday while there. It was fun having cake and ice cream.

After the class was officially over, but many people stayed. We had a chance to consecrate and bless our new wands around the fire.

While there I had some chest pains. This is never a good thing, but as a heart patient it a common, and non - life threatening event. I told Ragen what was happening, and that if it got worse we have to leave. I told I would go to a hospital, and if she would please take my car to her place, for it an automatic overnight visit. As it turn out after about 10 minutes all was well, and nothing became of it. I never want it to happen, but it a part of my life, there very little if anything that I can do to avoid it.

I love this group, it leadership and members. As any large group or family, you have disagreements at times. They can be work through. Not every is going to be close to everyone, but it is easy enough to be civil. I'm proud that I can amit when I'm wrong, able to say sorry, and just move on. Some need to learn this skill, but then we all have things to work on.

I'm re-charged, excited for Yule, and then Sunday Service the following weekend

On Wednesday afternoon, the children and I spent time with our friend, Fannessa. She is a fellow member of the Pagan and Witches Community Circle. Fannessa is great around my children, and they hit it off almost instantly. She is a close friend, who is fast becoming family.

I wanted to show her the natural gifts store in Boulder City, Nevada. Boulder City is about 35 minutes southeast of Las Vegas, and only place in the state that doesn't allow casino gaming within its limits. All the shops on main street remind of my youth in new england towns.

We also wandered into a jem of a place, The Boulder Dam Brewing Company!!

Below is the brewery's offerings:

POWDER MONKEY PILSNER -Named for the dam workers who packed all the explosives, this beer is flavorful and refreshing, yet not filling. Made with a combination of fresh Liberty hops from Yakima, Washington and the prized East Kent Goldings hops from England. Two-row brewers malt is used with a small amount of roasted barley to give this brew a well-rounded malty character and its light golden color.

Slow Cooker Recipes: Southern Living

I may not care much for southern politics, but no one can contest that they have some of the greatest food creations in the nation.

Here are some recipes from this culinary rich section of the United States:

Sina's Georgia -Style Boiled Peanuts
2 Pounds raw Peanuts, in shell
3/4 t0 1 Cup Salt
12 Cups Water

Combine all ingredients in a 5 or 6 quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on High 18 hours or until peanuts are soft. Drain peanuts before serving or storing. Store in zip- top plastic bags in refrigerator up to 2 weeks. Makes: 18 Cups

Cajun Boiled Peanuts: Add 1 (3-Ounce) package boil -in-bag shrimp and crab boil and 1/3 to 1/2 Cup hot sauce to slow cooker before cooking.

Chicken and Wild Rice Soup
2 Tablespoons Butter
3 Celery Ribs, thinly sliced
1 medium Onion, chopped
1 (8 Ounce) package sliced fresh Baby Portobello Mushrooms
2 Teaspoons minced Garlic
4 (14 Ounce) cans Roasted Garlic flavored Chicken Broth
3 (6 Ounce) packages Roasted Chicken Breast Chunks
1 1/2 Cups frozen Whole Kernel Corn, thawed and drained
1 (8 Ounce) can sliced Water Chestnuts, drained
1 Cup uncooked Wild Rice
1 Teaspoon Salt
3/4 Teaspoon freshly ground Pepper
2 Cups Whipping Cream
Garnish: Toasted Slivered Almonds

1) Melt butter in a large skillet over medium - high heat. Add celery and onion; cook 4 minutes or until almost tender. Add mushrooms and garlic; cook 2 minutes.
2) Combine mushroom mixture, broth, and next 6 ingredients in a 5 quart slow cooker.
3) Cover and cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours or until rice is tender. stir in whipping cream. Garnish, if desired.
Makes: 12 1/2 Cups

Sauerkraut and Sausage
1 ( 32 Ounce) jar Sauerkraut
3 large Garlic Cloves, pressed
1 Onion, chopped
1 large Granny Smith Apple, peeled and coarsely chopped
3/4 Cup Apple Cider
2 Tablespoons Dark Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon White Vinegar
1 Teaspoon Caraway Seeds
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Teaspoon freshly ground Pepper
1 (14 Ounce) package Smoked Beef Sausage, cut into 2 -inch pieces

1) Combine frist 10 ingredients in a 3 quart slow cooker. Add sausage
2) Cover and Cook on LOW 7 hours
Makes: 4 Servings

Loaded Jambalaya
3/4 Pound skinned and boned Chicken Thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
3/4 Pound skinned and boned Chicken Breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 Teaspoon Salt
1/8 Teaspoon Black Pepper
1/8 Teaspoon ground Red Pepper
2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
1 large Onion, chopped (about 2 cups)
1 large green Bell Pepper, chopped
2 Celery Ribs, chopped
4 Garlic Cloves, minced
1 (14 1/2 Ounce) can Diced Tomatoes, undrained
1/2 Pound fully cooked Ham, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1 (14 Ounce) can Chicken Broth
2 ( 3.5 Ounce) bags boil-in-bag Rice
1 Pound medium size fresh Shrimp
1/2 Cup chopped Green Onion
2 Tablespoons chopped fresh Parsley
1 Tablespoon Hot Sauce

1) Sprinkle chicken evenly with salt, black pepper, and red pepper.
2) Heat oil in large skillet over high heat. Add chicken; cook 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until browned. Spoon chicken into 5 quart slow cooker.
3) Add onion and next 3 ingredients to skillet; saute 4 minutes or until tender. Transfer to slow cooker. Add tomatoes, ham, and broth to slow cooker.
4) Cover and cook on LOW 5 hours. Meanwhile, cook rice according to package directions. set aside.
5) Peel shrimp, and devain, if desired. Stir shrimp, cooked rice, and remaining ingredients into slow cooker. Cover and cook on HIGH 15 minutes or until shrimp turn pink.
Makes: 4 to 6 Servings

Peppered Corn On The Cob
6 Tablespoons Butter, softened
4 Garlic Cloves, pressed
6 Ears fresh Corn, husks removed
1 Teaspoon freshly ground Pepper
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
12 Fully cooked Bacon Slices
1/2 Cup Chicken Broth
1 Jalapeno Pepper, minced

1) Combine butter and garlic in small bowl. Rub garlic butter evenly over ears of corn. Sprinkle evenly with pepper and salt. Wrap each ear of corn with 2 bacon slices, and secure with a wooden pick. Place corn in 5 quart slow cooker. Add broth and jalapeno pepper.
2)Cook and cover on LOW 3 to 4 hours, or untill corn is tender.
Makes: 6 Sevings

Supreme Court Says No To Review of Obama's Eligibility

The Supreme Court of the United States of America, on Monday, refused to grant an emergency appeal that questioned Barack Obama's eligibility to be president under the Constitution.

Not to give the claim any merit, but as way of information, The appeal claimed that Obama is not a "natural born citizen," one of the requirements the Constitution lists for eligibility to be president.

At the core of the claim states that Obama's duel status as a American Citizen, and a British Subject is a problem. Barack Obama's Kenyan father at the time was a British subject. and his mother is an American.

The Supreme Court had learn it lesson from its disaster of a ruling in 2000's Bush vs Gore. That ruling seated a unelected person, George W Bush, as President, sealing the stolen election, and bogus Florida vote count. This was a dark time for the court.

The current make up of the court, although very much Republican controlled, seems more willing to be open. They are willing to look in all areas for a ruling, The Constitution, National & State laws, International Law, and Nation & World trends. This is not to say that I agree with every ruling that is made.

According to an AP story,"At least one other appeal over Obama's citizenship remains at the court. A man in Lafayette Hill, Pa., argues that Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii as Obama says and Hawaii officials have confirmed.

He says Obama also may be a citizen of Indonesia, where he lived as a boy.

Federal courts in Pennsylvania have dismissed The Man's lawsuit. Federal courts in Ohio and Washington state have rejected similar lawsuits.

Allegations raised on the Internet say the birth certificate, showing that Obama was born in Hawaii on Aug. 4, 1961, is a fake.

But Hawaii Health Department Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino and the state's registrar of vital statistics, Alvin Onaka, say they checked health department records and have determined there's no doubt Obama was born in Hawaii."

It sad that in 2008 that some people are still so scared and filled with hate, and bigotry about an African -American being President, or having any success. it like they are stuck in southern 60's or pre-civil war mind set.

We don't need hate groups like KKK, Aryan Nation, White Pride, and NRA. I understand they have a right to free speech. but not to attempt the extermination of a race of people.

We are standing on one of the great moment is our history, and the history of the World. One day your great grandchildren, and grandchildren will ask you were you were when Barack Obama was elected and then sworn in as President of the United States of America.

I'm thankful that the Supreme Court heard and followed the will of the people, and upheld the election. By rejection this appeal, and not interfering, the court has help progress com to our nation, and democracy as a whole.

The Brew Pub at The Monte Carlo

My Dad and I loves beer and wine. When dad was younger, he made wine in the garage. He even brewed a few batches of beer. Dad got a kit from a brother-in-law doing research for a book in England.

My dad didn't seem to care much for national brands of beer. He tend to like the imports, and micro brews. He found great joy in finding these local bars or side of the road places that brewed there own stuff. When I became old enough to legally drink, I followed his lead, and for most part tastes.

I'm lucky that living here in Las Vegas, that they have so many breweries. One such place is The Brew Pub within The Monte Carlo Resort & Casino. This property is on the world famous, Vegas Strip.

When I first move here, I was on the strip most weekends, if not during the week. Things change a bit as you live here longer, and you even try to aviod the strip and the tourists. The exception to that is when family and friends are in town for a visit

Now that I'm a single dad, my ex-father-in-law come over every saturday to watch my children, and give a break. This has let me hang out more with friends, and to have a night on the town. The Brew Pub is alway in the front of my mind for places to go.

OJ Gets Squeezed

Fair or unfair, as I write this entry, OJ Simpson will have started serving his 9 t0 33 years in Nevada's prison system.

I sure that the appeals process has also already start on his behalf. Judge Glass, The Clark County District Attorney's office, and Las Vegas Metro Police Department will all be pick over about every move within this case.

I'm not really going to shed a tear for OJ, but in the pit of my stomach, I have to wonder was this really justice? Did the punishment really fit this crime that happen at Palace Station Casino?

This case is complicated because many people feel, myself include, that OJ Simpson was both guilty and framed by Los Angeles Police for the 1995 murders of his ex -wife Nicole Brown Simpson, and friend, Ron Goldman. During that case OJ had a legal dream team that found racist detective, Mark Fuhrman, and was able to create enough doubt in the mind of jurors to get an acquittal.

So it doesn't come as a surprise, that Mr Goldman and his daughter were at the sentencing hearing. Its amazing, although I'm not a math guy, but with only 15 seats open to the public in a lottery style, they were able to get two seats.

According to the AP Story by Ken Ritter,"Outside court, Fred Goldman, and sister, Kim, said they were delighted with the sentence."We are thrilled, and it's a bittersweet moment," Fred Goldman said. "It was satisfying seeing him in shackles like he belongs."

During the sentencing hearing, it seems that the 1995 case was not far from Judge Glass' mind, as the AP reported she said the following a few times, "I'm not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else."

CNN reported, "Denise Brown, the sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, issued a statement on the sentence saying, "It is very sad to think that an individual who had it all, an amazing career, beautiful wife and two precious children, has ended up like this.

'Allowing wealth, power and control to consume himself, he made a horrific choice on June 12, 1994, which has spiraled into where he is today.'

Brown said she was saddened that the couple's two children 'once again face the tragedy of yet another parent absent in their lives.' In the statement, she asks for prayers for the children, Sydney and Justin, and the Brown family."

Simpson's co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart, is also facing at least 15 years in prison. Four others, who at one time were co-defendants but took plea deals and testified against Simpson and Stewart will be sentenced by Judge Glass on Tuesday.

Simpson and Steward were taken away to prison after Judge Glass refused them bail while they appeal. I feeling this was also done to keep everyone safe, and defuse any potential reaction to the sentencing.

No matter if you agree or disagree with the LA case in 1995, or the Nevada case, you just know we haven't heard the last word on this case.

That said, if this sentience holds up, I don't believe Simpson will ever again be a free man. I don't think he will ever be granted parole. I also believe he'll leave which ever prison he assigned to in a casket. Serving 9 to 33 years in prison for a man who is now 61 years old is the same as a life sentence.

What Was Georgia Thinking?

Georgia had a chance to be great, not just a punchline to a Southern joke. To be a place America could be proud of again. They could have guaranteed the message and agenda of change from Obama, Democrats, and all worker of good got through Congress.

Instead they picked evil, and the politics of hate, bigotry, and fear. They re-elected one of the most conservative people to the Senate. They also gave the Republicans momentum heading into the 2010 mid - term elections.

Dishonable Senator Saxby Chambliss (pictured above left) will spend the next 6 years fighting the progress America wants. He'll push for the failed policies of Bush and the far right wing of the Republican Party. He is a puppet for the KKK, White Pride, NRA, and other hate groups.

On Politico.com,"Chambliss defeated Martin by 16 percentage points, 58 to 42 percent, with 93 percent of precincts reporting. Turnout was moderate across the state– estimated to be around 30-35 percent – a development that unexpectedly played to Chambliss’ advantage.

The runoff was necessitated after Chambliss came up about 9,000 votes short of the 50 percent threshold necessary to win the seat outright on Election Night.

In his victory speech, Chambliss said his re-election was a triumph of conservative principles.

“This race has been nationalized and people all around the world had their eyes on Georgia. And you delivered tonight a strong message to the world that conservative Georgia values matter,” he said.

RNC Chairman Mike Duncan, who stood by Chambliss as he gave his victory speech, echoed those remarks. “As we head into the 2010 cycle, tonight’s result sends a strong and confident message to those committed to electing candidates who stand by the core principles upon which our Party was founded,” he said in a statement. "

What core principles? Would that be wasting lives of the Troops for Halburtion profit,Stealing elections, Torture, War Crimes, Denying Human and Civil Rights to certain people, or destroying the economy!

I'm beginning to understand why the Republicans are red states, it is for all the blood on their hands. it makes you wonder if they have ever read or understood the Consistution that governs this nation.

Now this is the south so it not that unexpected, but the shock came as the nation was coming off the historic election of Barack Obama as President. I don't see why Obama didn't campaign on behalf of the Democrat, Jim Martin. Cutting a radio spot and auto -dialer message was not going to cut it.

In most counties within Georgia it legal to marry your first cousin, and one of the favorite pass times is to play dress -up as civil war reenactor. Although, they still can't figure out why they still lose everytime.

Any wonder why places like Georgia are known by the educated to be "flyover country".

Saying Good Bye To The Shield

Last Tuesday, the award winning FX original series, The Shield, ended after 7 seasons.

This ground breaking series showed what really goes on in and around a real inner city police division. I think it was so close that it made many in the uniform very nervous.

The Shield was created by Shawn Ryan, and was based on the many scandals of the Los Angeles Police Department, and its infamous Rampart Division.

The following is an overview of all seven seasons, thanks to Wikipedia,

Season 1 premiered March 12 2002. It gives an introduction to The Strike Team and the other characters of the Barn. Important plotlines are the aftermath of Vic's murder of Terry Crowley and Captain Aceveda's scheming to bring Vic and the Strike Team down; Dutch and Claudette's attempts at tracking down a serial killer; Julien's training under Danny and his struggle with his homosexuality; Vic's use of Rondell Robinson to control the local drug trade and the fallout; as well as the corrupt actions of Ben Gilroy.


Season 2 premiered January 7 2003. The season mostly revolves around a brutal new drug-lord, Armadillo--a sadistic child rapist, who likes to set his rivals on fire using a tire necklace and gasoline--who begins to take over the drug trade in Farmington. Meanwhile, Officer Sofer is involved in a shooting of a Muslim man and has to deal with the fallout. This season is also heavily concerned with the Strike Team's plan to rip off the money train of the Armenian Mob, which ends up going down in the season finale.


Season 3 premiered March 9 2004. The season mainly revolves around the aftermath of the Money Train Heist and its effects on the Strike Team, as the Armenian mob and also David Aceveda begins to suspect the Strike Team. In order to save the team, Lem (Curtis "Lemonhead" Lemansky) burns a majority of the money, ultimately leading to a confrontation which causes the Strike Team to split up in the season finale. The Armenian mob sends Margos Dezerian to wipe out the Strike Team. Dezerian leaves a trail of murders, resulting in his own execution at the hands of Mackey. Claudette had been promised a promotion to captain and throughout the season was in a supervising role, while Aceveda prepared to move onto city council. Near the end of the season an assistant district attorney was shot, and Wyms and Dutch discovered she had been a heavy drug user for the past 3 years. Wyms explored further and became very unpopular with the D.A. and around the Barn because she was (against orders) reopening the assistant DA's closed cases. This resulted in her being denied her promotion to captain of the Farmington District.


Season 4 premiered March 15 2005, with the addition of Glenn Close taking over the role as Farmington's new captain, Monica Rawling. The season dealt with the fallout from the Strike Team disbandment. Shane Vendrell, with new partner Army, enters into a dangerous situation with major drug lord Antwon Mitchell (Anthony Anderson), and seemingly accepts an order to kill Vic Mackey. The police were outraged after two officers were kidnapped and subsequently found murdered. In the end, the Strike Team is re-formed and manages to successfully put Antwon in prison. The season also deals with the controversial asset forfeiture policies of the new captain; Julien's opposition to these policies; and David Aceveda (now a City Councilman) dealing with the psychological aftermath of his sexual assault incident from the previous season. The season concludes with Captain Rawling losing her job over a dispute with the DEA. This plot twist reflected a real-life need for Glenn Close to return to New York.


One of the season's secondary plots involves Claudette and Dutch's marginalization as detectives because of Claudette's refusal to apologize to the DA for reopening the cases of a public defender who was discovered to be a functioning drug addict. Claudette's moral stand resulted in many of the prosecutor's cases being overturned. This cost Claudette her shot at becoming Farmington Captain. Dutch eventually resolved the situation by making a back-room deal with the DA to "keep Claudette in line" and do favors for the office in return for breaking back into action.


Season 5 premiered January 10 2006. The season revolved around Internal Affairs Department Lt. Jon Kavanaugh's investigation into the Strike Team, representing one of the greatest threats the team has ever faced. As a result of Kavanaugh turning one of Vic's informants, IAD became aware of Lem stealing heroin which he never turned in. Having found the heroin, IAD is capable of arresting Lem, but Kavanaugh wants him to incriminate the whole team and has him wear a wire, which he warns the team of and they use it to embarrass IAD. Kavanaugh puts on any form of pressure he can, finds out about Vic's share of the Money Train money, and ultimately arrests Lem having made a deal with Antwon Mitchell to put Lem there if convicted. Vic stands with him and gets bail, while Shane is worried he'll be turned. Claudette finally gets her shot as the captain of the Barn which she reluctantly accepts. The season concluded with Shane Vendrell murdering his friend and fellow team member Lem with a hand grenade.

"Wins and Losses"
The producers of The Shield produced a 15-minute "promosode", which premiered on Google on February 15 2007 to bridge the gap between Seasons 5 and 6. The episode focuses on the aftermath of Lem's death, including his funeral and flashbacks as co-workers reflect upon Det. Lemansky's life. The episode was said to have cost between $500,000 and $1 million to produce and was on Bud.TV for a 4 week period and later released to AOL and other media outlets. The "promosode" is also one of the special features included on the Season 5 DVD set.


Season 6 premiered on FX on April 3 2007. Continuing directly after season 5, Vic and the Strike Team are distraught over Lem's death. Shane has been overcome by guilt and becomes reckless and suicidal. Kavanaugh refuses to let the case die and resorts to planting evidence and coercing witnesses to lie about the Strike Team and specifically, Vic. Dutch and Claudette begin to suspect his integrity and Kavanaugh finally confesses to his actions and finds himself under arrest. Vic learns from Claudette that the Chief plans to force him into early retirement — and vows to wreak bloody vengeance on Lem's killer before losing his badge. Claudette learns that the Barn could be shut down if no improvements are made by the time quarterly crime statistics are released.


Season 7 premiered September 2 2008, consisted of 13 one-hour episodes. This was the final season according to its creator and the network. This was also confirmed by commercials on FX, billing this year as "the Final Act."

Detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) is a corrupt police officer and former leader of the Strike Team; he steals from drug dealers, beats and tortures suspects, and has committed murder more than once, including a fellow police officer. A quintessential Machiavellian, Mackey sees his tactics as a means to an end. Vic perceives himself as a loyal father and partner, and does, indeed, seem to intend to fulfil those roles, but his pathological desire to control everyone and everything around him results in hurting those closest to him, primarily his ex-wife and daughter, but also Lemansky. Mackey's family life is followed throughout the series. His marriage to his wife, a nurse, failed after numerous instances of infidelity on Mackey's part (including with Officer Sofer, which resulted in a child). Mackey and his wife have three children, two with autism. The special education needs of Mackey's children are one of many sources of stress (monetary and emotional) for Mackey. After Corinne leaves him, he is granted immunity by ICE and then confesses to the Crowley murder . He finishes the series working behind a desk.


Detective Shane Vendrell (Walton Goggins) was Vic Mackey's best friend and partner before the strike team was formed. Cast as a stereotypical redneck (complete with southern accent, a love of country music, and racism), his attempts to emulate Vic's manipulative machinations usually fail, at which point Vic has to bail him out. He has a wife, Mara, as well as a young son, Jackson. Shane requested a transfer from the Strike Team after he confessed to Vic that he killed fellow team member Curtis Lemansky. Vic threatened to kill Shane if he saw him again. He later cancelled his request to transfer to his old spot in vice because Vic was faced forced retirement as a result of his many crimes. Shane blackmails a drug dealer, who's facing his third strike, to kill Ronnie. The plan is revealed to Vic, Ronnie, and the entire Barn when the dealer is captured and confesses that he was blackmailed by Shane and a warrant is issued for Shane's arrest. Shane went on the run with his wife and son, and upon learning of Vic's immunity, he kills them and commits suicide.


Detective Curtis "Lem" Lemansky (Kenny Johnson) was a cop with a conscience. He had a history of working with kids, and maintained a soft-spot for them. His loyalty to Vic and the Strike Team led him to go along with most of their illegal schemes, although he didn't know about all of them. An original member of the Strike team, Shane Vendrellkilled Lemansky in the finale of the fifth season because he, Shane, was under the mistaken impression that Lemansky was going to rat on the rest of the team. Lem was unmarried and had no children.

Detective Ronnie Gardocki (David Rees Snell) is the Strike Team's surveillance and electronics expert. Though little is known about Ronnie, he has proven more and more in recent times to be the most solid, emotionally stable member of the Strike Team and has remained loyal to Vic out of enlightened self-interest, knowing that divisions between them would only lead to bad ends for both. The scars on his face, given to him by Armadillo in Season 2, are proof of his loyalty to the team. He is not married, preferring instead the company of Asian prostitutes. In the final season, he becomes the official leader of the Strike Team before Captain Claudette Wyms shuts it down. During season 7 we see his intense anger over his and Mackey's inability to gain revenge on Shane for Lem's murder. He and Vic concoct a plan to have Shane killed by the Armenian gang that knew about the Money Train robbery. Ronnie is targeted by a drug dealer hired by Shane to kill him. After the drug dealer confesses and Shane flees, Claudette disbands the strike team, forcing Ronnie to become a "suit and tie" detective while trying to help Vic and stay out of prison. In the final episode, Ronnie is arrested after Vic implicates him in his immunity confessions.


Detective Julien Lowe (Michael Jace) is the newest addition to the Strike Team. During the formation of a new Strike Team, Claudette offered Julien to Kevin Hiatt as a possible addition to the team. Claudette made the offer to Julien, who was hesitant, mainly because of the thought of being partnered with Vic on a daily basis. After being assured that Mackey was going to be moved out of the team, Julien accepted the promotion and is now an official member of the Strike Team. Julien has taken and passed the detectives exam but has yet to be moved into a detectives possition. Despite his desire to be a fully functioning member of the Strike Team, Julien knows that he remains on the outside of the clique. He is asked to choose which side he will be on when Claudette finally has a case to go after Mackey and Vendrell.


Councilman David Aceveda (Benito Martinez) is a politically ambitious former police captain elected to the Los Angeles City Council. He is one of Vic Mackey's main rivals, although often they have forged uneasy alliances for various reasons. He was orally raped at gunpoint, which eventually drove him to arrange a deal with druglord Antwon Mitchell to kill his rapist in prison. During the final season, Aceveda is faced with the growing influence of a Cruz Pezuela who offers to seemingly help David get elected as the next Mayor. Although receptive to his help at first, Aceveda realizes that Pezuela is dirty and attempts to distance himself only to find the Pezuela has photographs of the sexual assault. The last season deals with him and Vic cooperating one last time as they attempt to take Pezuela and possibly the Mexican cartel down.


Captain Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder) is a veteran detective. Claudette, along with her partner Dutch, can be viewed as the voice of morality at the Barn; as a result, she is often at odds with Vic over his tactics. Later in the series, Claudette revealed to Dutch that she has had lupus for fifteen years. In season 5, she is appointed Captain after several attempts in previous years. After finally being promoted to captain, Claudette proves to be at least as capable as her predecessors. However, during the final season, her lupus returns and begins to interfere with her ability to do her job. In the final episode, she admits to Dutch that she is in the terminal stage of her illness.


Detective Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach (Jay Karnes) is characterized by many as a socially inept nerd even though he is a successful police detective. Assigned to the Farmington District of Los Angeles, he is often the first called to investigate violent crimes because of his specialization in criminal profiling and serial killers. Along with his partner, Detective Claudette Wyms, Dutch is widely considered to be the moral center of the show owing to his willingness to do the right thing in spite of the temptation to engage in illegal police activities. A scene in one episode showed him strangling a live cat after questioning an actual serial killer about what he sees in his victim's eyes.The series never follows-up on that ominous scene, but neither does Dutch ever perform a similar act of cruelty. Vic and Shane, in a flashback, immediately decide to pick on Dutch, as if they were seniors and he a freshman, and Dutch's clearly vengeful relationship with Vic's ex-wife did not help, but after Dutch actually challenges Vic to a fight in Season 3, Vic ends the bullying.


Sergeant Danielle "Danny" Sofer (Catherine Dent) is a patrol officer who aspires to become a detective. She has an on-again-off-again sexual relationship with Vic and a complicated history with Dutch. She is assigned desk duty as a result of her pregnancy and takes maternity leave after the birth of her son, Lee. The identity of the father was initially unknown; later, in the sixth season episode "Chasing Ghosts," it was heavily implied that it was Vic. Shortly afterwards, Danny returned from maternity leave early so that she could take the position of Sergeant at the Barn. In Season Seven Vic threatens to force Danny to take a paternity test.
